Symbolism

SHIELD

The stylized mariner's compass card, highlighting navigation and the cardinal points of the compass, underscores the mission of the ship: to conduct coastal patrols, to detect illegal activities and to carry out interdiction operations. The USS ZEPHYR is named for the weather phenomenon known as "zephyr," a westerly wind; therefore, the west direction on the compass rose is emphasized in red. The griffin, a powerful mythological beast renowned for keen eyesight and hearing, is indicative of USS ZEPHYR's detection operations. He is gold to imply excellence and high ideals. The light blue border alludes to coastal waters and symbolizes unity.

CREST

The anchor denotes naval prowess. The lightning bolts represent the ship's quick response and electronic capabilities in monitoring and detection missions. The crossed gauntlets grasping two swords bladed with lightning bolts are a symbol of authority depicting USS ZEPHYR's interdiction and law enforcement mission. Red is emblematic of courage, valor and speed.

SUPPORTERS

The trident, adapted from the Navy special warfare insignia, is crossed with a Navy sword and refers to the ship's mission of providing support for the special warfare forces.

SEAL

Dark blue and gold are the colors traditionally associated with the Navy and represent the sea and excellence.
